Welcome to
The Hall Green H.G. Club
The Hall Green H.G. Club is a private members club based in the leafy suburb of Hall Green, an area in southeast Birmingham.
The club was originally known as the 'Home Guard Club’ and was formed in 1945 when 'B' Company, 24" Warwickshire Battalion of the Home Guard were stood down at the end of the war. There was a desire to continue with the camaraderie formed during 1942-1945 and this led to the decision to form the club so that friendships could be continued through more peaceful pursuits.
At that time, the premises consisted of two wooden buildings with a metal infrastructure and the smaller of the buildings became the beer cellar. At that time unused grounds adjacent to the club buildings belonged to Robin Hood Tennis Club. These were secured on a rental basis and the formation of the club commenced. The freehold to the grounds and the club premises were purchased at a later date, at an extremely competitive price even at that time! The current valuation of the club, as given in the accounts at each AGM, provides an indication of the acumen of the club’s founders.
The Tunnel of Love
In 1962 the lounge and snooker room were rebuilt in their present forms. During these alterations, the members were housed in a series of coupled Nissen huts which became known thereafter as the 'Tunnel of Love' with the bar at the far end.
In 1970 the present function room was erected and served a dual purpose. Firstly, it served as an indoor rifle range for the resident rifle section. Secondly, it was used as an entertainments room (but not when the rifle section was around!) and served as the club restaurant on a Saturday evening.
Refurbishment
In 1999 the rifle section was disbanded, and the function room and the lounge were refurbished. On completion the function room was renamed the 'Don Dring Room,’ and the lounge was renamed the 'Peter Moore Lounge'. Both Don Dring and Peter Moore were long standing members of the club who contributed many years of valuable service.
400+ Members
Currently, the club has in excess of 400 members. Due to it being a private members club, membership is obtained by completing an application form and then attending an informal interview where potential members agree to abide by the clubs’ rules and regulations, such as its dress code and admittance of guests.
Join the Club
In conclusion, you will find that the Hall Green H.G. Club is a friendly, respectful establishment where a member can relax with family and friends, and of course take advantage of favourable bar prices and excellent catering.
